Maastrichts Mooiste 2007

At sunday 3 june 2007 we walked the Maastrichts Mooiste Walking tour.

There were two routes to choose from 10 or 20 kilometers. Both routes are visiting a large part of the unique Savelsbos. The Savelsbos is a typical slope forest at the east side of the Maas river, between Maastricht and Eijsden. The subsoil is limestone, gravel and loes. The history of this soil goes back for 65-80 million years. In this forest you can find some hidden secrets. The first thing we encountered was the largest badger house in our country. And further on we could visit a prehistoric flintmine. At these special places there were guides to tell us all about it. At the badgers they even played a videotape, because badgers are nocturnal and this was the only changes to see them. In the flint mine a guide gave a short tour and told about the people who harvested flint here over 5000 years ago. They made arrows, axes and knives out of the flint. At other spot there were natureguides who told us all about the plants and animals that live here.

Both routes started at the Rijckholt castle. The route from both the 10 and the 20 km went through the village of Rijckholt and after that directly into the forest.
