ZIMBABWE - BOTSWANA

From 30 july to 22 august 1999 we went with Afriesj to Zimbabwe and Botswana. Our group excisted of
17 travellers, a guide and a driver. We travelled there with Afriesjs´own truck.
In the truck are tents and cooking gear, so you don´t have to bring your own.
During the trip we sometimes cooked on a campfire.

Most times the food was good, but luckely going out for dinner isn´t expensive in Zimbabwe or Botswana.

The trip started in Harare capital of Zimbabwe. From there we went to the Great Zimbabwe Ruins, a complex of ruines of a royal
village dating from 1200-1600.

Next was Bulawayo, the second city of Zimbabwe. Close to this city is the Matopos
National Park. Famous for its rockformations, The white rhinos in the gamepark and the grave of Cecil Rhodes.

At Francistown we entered Botswana. Changed some money at the bank and drove to
the saltpans near Nata. Put up our tents at Nata Sanctuary and enjoyed the sunset.
Next stop is Maun, the starting point for Okavango Delta trips. The Okavango
Delta ends in the desert and never reach the sea. We go into the delta with mokorros.
A mokorro is hollow treetrunk a 'pooler' pushes your mokorro forward with a pole.
Not all mokoro are waterproof. But that can´t spoil the trip. After our mokoro sank
we changed to another one and again another one to finally reach the island where we spend the night.

After our stay in the delta, we drove with open jeeps from Maun to Moremi,
a national park placed in the delta. We camp in the middle of the gamepark.
The entire night a huge campfire burnt, because there are lions everywhere here.
But they just caught a zebra, so we are alright.

After Moremi we go back to Maun and pass Nata on our way to Chobe. We camp at
the banks of the Chobe river, where we make a sunsetcruise. At sunset all the animals come to the chobe river to drink.

Time to go back to Zimbabwe. Just across the border we reach Vic Falls. The
famous Victoria Falls made this place a tourist hotspot. One can do anything one
likes here, as long as ypou bring enough US $. A small collection of activities:
Bunji-jump of a 110 m high bridge over the Zambezi river, rafting on the Zambezi,
ultra-light flying, a chopperflight above the falls And what ever you can think
off. We liked the 'nightdrive' driving in an open vehicle searching for wildlife with spotlights.
And if all you want to do is see the waterfalls, you can go by foot to
the Nationale Park. Cross the bridge to zambia and enjoy the sights from there, beautiful!
We camped at the citycampground in the middle of the small town. At one night
two enormous elephants broke through the fence to get to the waste from the tourist.
This way they are insured of an easy meal.
After Vic Falls we drove to Lake Kariba. An enormous dam in the Zambezi river.
Two nights we sleep at a boat on which we go to Kariba. A quick look at the dam
and back to Harare, where we sleep in a hotel the last night before returning home.
