AUSTRALIA

In 1994 We went back to see more of the country. We rented a car in Brisbane and drove to Cairns. Enjoying the beautifull eastcoast. From Cairns we flew to Alice Springs. There we rented a 4x4 and drove to Ayers Rock and after that the entire road north to Darwin.

Noosa Head

From Brisbane along the coast to the north. Except for the ocean you also see a lot of sugarcanefields.

In Townsville we visited the Billabong Sanctuary. They keep all sort of indigenous animals there like the koala and the kangaroo.

We also took a daytrip to Magnetic Island. At low tide a part of the the reef is dry there.

Most people live in cities and towns along the coast. Not much to find inland. Now and then we encountered an old mining town.

We flew to Alice Springs in the Northern Territory.

And from there we drove to Ayers Rock,
the most famous rock in Australia.

Ayers Rock (Uluru)
Ayers Rock (or Uluru) seems to change colour in the setting.

devils marbles
roadkill The road from Ayers Rock to Darwin is very long, straight and boring. We saw more dead kangaroo then live ones. At every highlight along the way like īdevils marblesī we just have to stop, to keep awake.

Mataranka
It is very hot in the outback. And the hotsprings at Mataranka is a welcome surprise. And while the water is 35°C we still felt freshened by it.

Next stop is Kakadu National Park. A nature park that is managed by the Aboriginal people.

In the northern territory one can but an insurance that pays in case you get eaten by a croc.

Nonsense?? .................

After Kakadu we visited Litchfield, another park in the Northern Territory.

It is very hot and we are pleased by the many small lakes that are crocfree....

In 1997 we visited Cairns and surroundings again, maybe you read this story before this. Otherwise you will find it here.
